don't sweat it

00:04

To me, the perfect summer's day involves clear, sunny skies, Italian for lunch and free time to finally see friends outside of school. As a little holiday treat, I've been indulging in a few more slices of pizza and long nights binge-watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and it becomes easy to forget that these unhealthy habits can pile up.

To prevent myself from spending all summer away in my bedroom, I've come up with a simple workout/lifestyle routine to stay fit and get healthier whilst I'm on vacation.

+ The Workout Routine

Warmup: 50 squats + 20 pushups + 30 situps + 1 minute plank

I've been using this as a baseline warmup/basic workout, and every day or so I add 5-10 more repetitions to every exercise. It's great as a warmup before heading to the gym, and doing it everyday has certainly helped me build more stamina! On days when I'm feeling tired or sore, I just stick to this simple routine.

Cardio: 30+ minute run + 20 jump squats or 20 burpees

I try and do cardio at least 2-3 times a week. Cardio exercises tend to be a lot more high-intensity, so besides the warmup, this is probably the shortest section of my workout.

One thing I've been doing recently is finding workout calendars online to try out this summer. While I focus on cardio and full-body exercises in my own basic routine, these calendars incorporate days that focus on specific muscle groups. Since I have my own workout plan, I don't do these exercises everyday, but they're definitely a fun challenge :-)

+ Pamper Time!

Cut scene to post-workout Justine. I'll spare you the details, but I think it's safe to say that after an hour of running, jump squats, lunges (and a lot of sweat), your girl can afford a long shower and some pamper time. Clean bedsheets, fresh flowers, new magazine, maybe throw in a Lush Bath Bomb - simple treats like this every once in a while definitely help to keep me motivated.

Other Things to do

+ Wake up Earlier (and Sleep Earlier!)
I know, it sounds cringe-worthy when you say it out loud. However, on days where I've woken up earlier to start my workout routine, I've found myself to be a lot more productive. Waking up before 10:00 AM is still hard to get used to, but I like to think of it as the best way to maximize vacation time.

+ Eat Cleaner

While exercise is one part of being healthy, the other part is about maintaining a healthy diet. Again, while a treat once in a while is fine, avoid completely pigging out this summer (I know, it's hard!)

+ Find a Friend

Grab a friend, grab a sibling, maybe even grab your parents! I know that having someone else to work out with helps keep me motivated (though not always on track). And when you want to hang out with friends, consider going for a run or doing circuit training together, instead of going out to eat or watch a movie.

+ Don't Forget Rest Days

When your planning a fitness schedule, set aside rest days - you deserve them! If you're in pretty good shape, one or two rest days a week should be fine.

Hope you enjoyed today's post! I'll be posting more frequently now that school's out as well, so expect more posts too :) Thank you for reading! x

  1. I'm always finding that I'm telling myself to get more fit, yet I don't do anything about it xD But these tips are awesome, and I'll definitely try some of these out in my next school break! Thanks for them ^_^ ♡

    1. Thank you Lena! It's taken me a long time to get into fitness as well, but I have some amazing friends and mentors who've really motivated me. Let me know how it goes! :)

  2. Hey there Justine!
This post is actually saving me right now--I was looking everywhere for a good routine that's not crazy intense or really slow either. I think I can do this :)
Eating cleanly is definitely a bit hard! I try my best but it's so easy to just opt for cereal because I'm too lazy to make something haha
Anyways, hope your summer is going well and you're having an amazing time with your friends & family!

    1. Of course, I couldn't agree more! Eating healthier (esp after stalking Buzzfeed Food and watching countless episodes of Masterchef Australia) is really hard, but more than rewarding. Hope your summer is going great as well, and I'm zo glad to hear this post was able to help you out :)
